Apple is preparing to launch its first smart display, a device Bloomberg and 9to5Mac call the HomePad, on October 13, according to a new Bloomberg report. The smart home hub has been rumored for years, and the latest leak finally puts a date on it: less than two weeks away.
The report also details the design. The tabletop model has a 6-inch square display and takes cues from the iconic iMac G4, with a rounded base and a floating screen. Apple is also said to be readying a second version built to be mounted on a wall.
Apple HomePad design and specs
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the HomePad's overall look echoes the iMac G4, which paired a half-dome base with a metal arm holding up its display. The new device is described as about as thick as an iPhone, with quarter-inch black bezels similar to older iPads and rounded corners with no sharp edges.
A second, wall-mounted version is also planned. It uses USB-C for power and has a thin, square-shaped base beneath the display that houses the speakers and microphones; that base reportedly sits flat against the wall below the screen. The device is codenamed J490, per the report.
